Thorn, i have but one last question to ask. I know that this is a Pink Floyd board, but the following is relevant, i think, to what i'm trying to say. Has anything Roger Waters ever written (hell, has ANYTHING on earth) ever found you with the force of the following lyric by Robert Johnson? Robert Johnson - If I Had Possession Over Judgment DayIf I had possession over judgment day if I had possession over judgment day Lord, the little woman I'm lovin' wouldn't have no right to pray And I went to the mountain lookin' far as my eyes could see And I went to the mountain lookin' far as my eye could see Some other man got my woman and the -'a lonesome blues got me And I rolled and I tumbled and I cried the whole night long And I rolled and I tumbled and I cried the whole night long Boy, I woke up this mornin' my biscuit roller gone Had to fold my arms and I slowly walked away spoken: I didn't like the way she done Had to fold my arms and I slowly walked away I said in my mind, "Yo," trouble gon' come some day Now run here, baby set down on my knee I wanna tell you all about the way they treated me *sigh* Well rit. . . seein as how I'm not 100% certain I've heard the above quoted song, and as a result am forced to dry-read it, with every nuance of vocal expression excised, not to mention removed from the context of the emotive music behind it, I can honestly say, that yes, practically EVERY lyric ever written or sung by Waters, has more emotional impact on me, than, for instance, Mr. JOhnson's biscuit roller gone missin', and how he's all cryin about it, on account of how he couldn't get no sleep from cryin his eyes out about how his woman left him. Pardon me for saying so . . . but I got no pity for the man.

And his song leaves me flat and emotionless.

Now - - let me test a similar, "fair's fair" lyric-divorced-from-its-music-source experiment on ye:
Try dry-reading these lyrics, and tell me whether they elicit even the slightest twinge of emotional response in you:
"If I were a swan, I'd be gone. If I were a train, I'd be late. And if I were a good man, I'd talk with you More often than I do.
If I were to sleep, I could dream. If I were afraid, I could hide. If I go insane, please don't put Your wires in my brain.
If I were the moon, I'd be cool. If I were a book, I would bend. If I were a good man, I'd understand The spaces between friends.
If I were alone, I would cry. And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry. And if I go insane, Will you still let me join in the game?
If I were a swan, I'd be gone. If I were a train, I'd be late again. If I were a good man, I'd talk with you More often than I do."
Is it just me - - or do Mr. Water's lyrics here reflect a more pro-active approach to despondency and/or loss of intimacy, by showcasing an itinerary of options offered as positive actions by which to express his personal angst? I'd wager even these words - removed from their melodic/emotive source - are still able to elicit a reaction in a reader who had never even heard the song.

Then again - and obviously - - Mr Johnson's blues tune has struck a resonating chord within your heart, just as Water's has struck mine. Therefore, I offer the possible reasoning that the quality of the lyrics has nothing whatsoever to do with it; rather, it all boils down to our own unique & respective personal reactions and histories with each song. Apples and Oranges.
