I'm not surprised that we've voted the Shins as 5th best band of the decade though. When I asked 30 people at work yesterday who the best band of the decade is so far, possibly as many as none of them mentioned the shins whatsoever, which was a surprisingly strong showing proving their position here to be no fluke. Of course, at least half the sample voted for "Fuck off, strange guy from the pod in the corner." Not a band I'd heard mentioned before.

That's funny man. I have a similar work place, but it's evolved into an understanding where, (a) I understand that all my younger co-workers have shit taste in music and little interest in contemporary obscurities and (b) they understand that the old guy in the 3rd office down the hall has finally stopped asking them if they've heard the new fucking Broken Social Scene and who the fuck are they anyway you weirdo.

Muse isn't better than Radiohead, Riley. What are are you talking about?
Broken Social Scene.

You're probably right Ken, but Muse are front of mind for me right now, so I voted agaisnt my normal Radiohead tendancy I suppose. They are however better than The White Stripes, but not as good as Broken Social Scene.

If the White Stripes were from just right across the river in Windsor, rather than Detroit, you'd be all about them, Dog. Admit it.

Nah. I'm pretty luke warm on blues based rehashed rock stuff these days, unless it really rips (which they do admittedly but fairly irregularly - De Stijl just absolutely and undeniably rocks in a few spots), and even if like in the WS's case it's a tweaked version of stuff I've heard a million times. I like the Stripes a lot, but I really think they have about a 50% quality quotient they end with when albums are finished. If all their albums (except maybe Elephant) were ep's instead of full lengths I would be on side and White wouldn't have so many medicore holes in his portfolio. Plus just because we have better bands than you guys up here right now, it doesn't mean everything here is quality either. Broken Social Scene are the most interesting band making music right now. Even when they shoot and miss here and there they do it well, and it still comes out quality. And nothing good comes out of Windsor. It's too close to Detroit.

If the White Stripes were from Manchester I'd be sleeping with Meg and telling you all how she makes Moon and Peart look like one-armed spastics banging a pan with a spoon in comparison.
However, they're not.
Radiohead are better than Muse by a mile. It's a closer contest based solely on activity since 2000 though.
I hear you on the young co-workers Riley. Now loads of mine have twigged I'm a music fanatic (not least because I have a regular slot on the subject in the company newsletter) they keep asking me bizarre questions. Two just from yesterday: - "Oooh, you'd know this... what's that band that did that "Everybody's changing but I la-la-la the same. I'm not normally into weirdo rock stuff but I love that one" - "Have you heard any Sean Paul? Oooh, you need to hear Sean Paul."

Keane. Weirdo rock stuff. We're getting old. Truthfully.

One guy there asked what I was listening to on mp3 the other day. He seems a good lad though, so I passed it over to him and let him listen to Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay". A great song on any level, surely?
His verdict: "I'd strip the vocals from this, speed up the tempo, add a Spanish/flamenco flavour to the guitar...hmmm... then probably some break-beats and a little funky bass. Then rap over the top of it. If I'd produced it, that's how I'd have tweaked it."

See that's funny, but you or I probably would have said the same ridiculous thing 5-6 years ago. Man I wish I was still that type of arsehole.

You have a very good point. In fact, you've just explained to me why I like the guy.

I also love how you've now indirectly confirmed that I am still indeed an arsehole of some variety.

Rileydog,
Say man, is there anyway you can burn me a copy of that Muse mix you're making for JLLM?
