I ask: Can former members of great bands have new projects that will forever taint their great band forever?
I give you some examples: 1. Chris Cornell: This guy should be fucking killed for Audioslave. I expect it from that goober Tom Morello, but not Cornell. 2. Big Audio Dynamite: I'm not kidding! For a while there I didn't think I would ever be able to listen to the Clash again. 3. The Foo Fighters: For a while there, Dave's Wings-esque cheecky cheery bullshit almost ruined Nirvana forever for me.

Would be rough to mention all of it but solo-Beatles anyone?
Foos have not disappointed me. In all I find Dave Grohl more life-affirmingly fun than Nirvana ever was. Lots of respect for him.
Patton after FNM has diversified as well, not everything has been good but most of it is at least interesting.

I'll have to disagree with you there. I will take Patton's post FNM stuff over anything he ever did with Faith No More. I like FNM, but they don't hold a candle to Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, or the other one off collabs he has done in recent years.
I have respect for Grohl when he's behind the drum kit for other people. I find his own music to be cash cow syrupy non-sense, with a few exceptions. The song "My Hero" was really really good.

I agree that Fantomas and Tomahawk are better than Faith No More. Mr. Bungle, too, but they were always his primary band, so I don't guess that counts.
I can't fucking stand any Foo Fighters after the second album, but I still like Dave Grohl a whole fucking lot. That butchering of "Stairway" he did on Kilborn was gold.
Chris Cornell is the obvious answer here, and I'm DYING to hear Thayil and Cameron do something to redeem the old band. It's just baffling.
Weezer- I know some of you were never fans, but fuck that. Blue Album and Pinkerton are top 75 of the 90s material, easy. At first their later albums were, "Well...maybe they're okay..." but now it's gotten so awful that I actually do question whether or not those two albums are worth a shit or whether I was just a dumb kid.

I'm right with Luke on Grohl ... I can tolerate later Foo Fighters (it's fine on the radio, but I don't need to own it, or hear it often), but I like Dave a lot and think those first two records are excellent. And no matter what Grohl does, it really has zero impact on my opinion of Nirvana b/c (1) Nirvana was really Kurt's band, and (2) what Grohl brought to the drum kit in Nirvana more than offsets anything questionable that he might do on his own now.
Cornell, on the other hand ... for that matter, Morello and the other ex-Rage guys as well ... WTF are they all thinking?
And much as I love Don Henley's first three solo albums, the utter mediocrity of his last record and the awfullness of the Eagles has had a bit of an effect on me.

I think when the Doors got Scott Stapp of Creed to sing w/ them they pretty much fucked their legacy. (Of course Ken's question will be "What Legacy?").

I think the Foos are a pretty good singles band, but none of their albums are really solid...Most of what I hear by them on the radio or on some mix cd at a party is pretty passable. It doesn't hold a candle to Nirvana, but it's passable nonetheless.

Doesn't David Johanson pretty much own the "Destroyed Legacy" crown?

Nah...I think that's more of an INXS type deal. They didn't hurt the band's legacy, they just proved that the frontman was the only guy that mattered and the rest of them are just a bunch of washed up, greedy jokes.

Oh man, I don't even know why they are calling that new David Johanssen record "The New York Dolls". I haven't heard it yet, but I believe it's going to suck.
I'm so glad that Weezer is breaking up. I really liked "Pinkerton", but everything else has been terrible, unredeemably bad. Awful. Horrible. And I think of those words as compliments for them.
I've got two for you that make me very angry: 1. The Misfits releasing terrible record after terrible record without Glen Danzig (hence why they are terrible) 2. The Dead Kennedys. Touring with out Jello is like a drummer trying to play drums without his arms and legs. It works for Def Leppard but not many others.

Sad but true....Shame, because Robby Kreiger is actually a pretty good guitarist, very underrated IMO...actually the whole band wasn't half bad...but you're right, the Doors carrying on w/o Morrison is shameful, and just shows the rest of the guys are after money. --------- I kinda dig Weezer. I haven't heard the last two albums really, but some friends of mine say they suck goat balls. I liked Pinkerton, Green, and Blue though...

Badmotorfinger. Superunknown.
Far too fucking good to be ruined by any subsequent Audioslave bullshit. In 200 years time no-one will even know Audioslave existed, but I reckon people will still be spinning Badmotorfinger (and hopefully wondering why so many stupid bastards from the late twentieth century actually rated Nevermind more highly).

And with Danzig getting knocked on his ass on the internet, I don't think there's much hope for those guys. As for the Dead Kennedys, I believe that the rest of band "selling out" may be bad for the band's legacy, but let's face it- these actions have cemented Jello's place in history if there was ever a question about. He's gone from iconic bandmember to all around iconic rock legend. His stuff with The Melvins holding up so well. And hey, let's not forget one guy who is TRULY pissing on a legacy- fucking Axl Rose. Velvet Revolver is no Appetite for Destruction or anything, but it's a really good thing those guys came around or Axl would really have succeeded in pissing on every single thing about GNR and not just himself.

This could well be true, and maybe it's a case for side projects doing less damage than a band actually moving along to make shitty albums, like the aforementioned Dead Kennedys, Weezer, and The Doors. I mean, let's face it, in "200 years", the Rolling Stones are going to be a fucking joke.

Oh man, the Stones until about 75 are incredible. Then they just vomited all over their careers after that. I feel that way about the Who sometimes as well.
Man, Axl Rose is the Michel Jackson of rock. I wouldn't doubt it for a second if that guy had a closet full of illegal things that I would be out of character mentioning.
