I thought RHCP started being bearable recently - say, the last 3 albums. Before that they were guilty of peddling tuneless funk. There's nowt wrong with discovering a bit of melody.

Shit, I'm getting old.

I haven't heard anything from the new RHCP save Danny California (which I am now officially sick of -- never liked Mary Jane's Last Dance that much either, FWIW), but IMHO both Californication and By the Way were career peaks for the band. The latter is simply the best thing they've ever done. Their early work showed flashes of brilliance, but it took 'em this long to really put it together for an entire album.
Like Jesus said, there's nothing wrong with a bit of melody.

There's plenty wrong with Melody. Screw you guys, I'm taking my free jazz records and going home.

I think they're too old to be bringing the funk like they were, but that's still where most of their best stuff is. I mean, say what you will, Anthony really is too old to be jumping around in a sock squealing, "I want to party on yo pussay bay-bay!"
Ironically, I'd probably rank "Soul to Squeeze" and "Breaking the Girl" as my two favorite RHCP songs (well...other than "Sir Psycho", of course), but in general I prefer the funkier tunes. I think at this point I might prefer Uplift Mofo to everything they've ever done.

I think it will forever be "Mother's Milk" for me. That right there will go down as their crowning achievement.

I will tell you who I think has lost it and might bring it back is Metallica. Rick Rubing producing their new record is giving me some serious hope that these guys won't go down in history as gutless chumps after releasing 4 of the greatest metal records in a row. I will probably eat my words and look stupid for saying it, but I still think they have the potential to be fucking brilliant again if they check their egos at the studio door and actually rock again. I'm hoping hoping hoping that they do something heavy and good again.

What do you guys think about bands that continue on without the original singer?

Unless they're AC/DC, then no.

Yeah, not too many bands can pull that off successfully.

I can think of a couple............. AC/DC like Luke pointed out and Van Halen. I'm sorry but I actually like Hagar better in VH then Roth, but I'm biased as I just hate Roth.
I'm running through my head of a few other bands.....hold on.......
Alright, Faith No More. Patton was a good decision after Mosely and especially after Courtney Love.
Some of the stuff with Dio with Sabbath was pretty damn good.
Bruce Dickenson after Paul in Iron Maiden was a pretty good thing too. The other guy was smoking as well.
Also, Anthrax. I really love old Anthrax, but I thought that John Bush did a decent job with those guys.

Well, there's a few bands that had their peak with later singers...Anthrax, Deep Purple and Iron Maiden to name a couple, but it's hard to replace a singer once he's become the recognised voice of the band.
Brian Johnson sucks. Outside of Back In Black and the occational single thereafter AC/DC went to shit when Bon died.

Both the (orginal none of that reunion crap) Dio Sabbath albums are very good. They should of broken up right after that though.

I like "Thunderstruck" and "Who Made Who", those are pretty good songs on some pretty decent records.
Now, I did see some YouTube stuff of the new Misfits and The Dead Kennedys, and wow, what the hell were those guys thinking?! Well yeah, money is factor, but besides that........
