Dudes, I'm gonna say it. Red Hot Chilli Peppers? Beastie Boys after 2 HORRIFIC in a row? I don't know, but I find myself wondering if I'm looking at RHCP after their prime holding Frusciante back and if the Beastie Boys have lost their Mojo. Holding Frusciante back? Not only is he now the showcase member of the band on nearly all of their songs, but he also has released what seems like several thousand solo albums in the last couple years. If that's being held back, then I can't imagine what it would be like for him if he wasn't in the band anymore. Maybe one of his songs would be being adopted as the national anthem or something.

I don't know, I have been listening to that new album and some of it's good but much of Kiedis is making me cringe. I felt this way about some aspects of Californication and By the Way as well. I feel like they have lost their hunger.

I think they may be shitting on their legacy, but as far as holding Frusciante back, that's just silly. That's no different than saying that they're holding Flea back.
Without the Chili Peppers, about five people would have heard any of his solo stuff.
It's conceivable that the Chili Peppers could have toned Kiedis down and made better music, which would have in turn showcased John a bit more, but without the Peppers altogether, he's not going to do anything more than what he's doing solo.
Agreed on the Beasties, though. Their last few albums have made it seem almost laughable that white people before Eminem had any impact on hip hop. It's definitely a case of sucking so bad that people question if you were every really significant at all.

Eh, I don't know what you two are talking about anyway. Stadium Arcadium is their best album since BloodSugarSexMagik. Their second or third best album ever, IMO.
But yeah, even if you don't like that album, I don't see how anyone could say that Frusciante is being held back. He's in his prime as a guitar player right now, and he has a whole lot of outlets for that creativity, between RHCP, his solo work, and his collaborations with other artists (like that album he did with the Fugazi guys). Luke is absolutely right that without RHCP, Frusciante's ability to get his material out there would be way more limited.

I don't know, I totally think that had Frusciante not done a ton of drugs and been very focused after the fame of "Mother's Milk" and "BSSM" he would have been just fine. I agree that his noteriety is due to his tenure in the band and he is shining, but I would hardly hold the new one up to their previous releases. They have been through some ups and downs, but Stadium is too bloated for me. The drums are also just bad.

Who said he wouldn't have been fine had he not done a ton of drugs?

I read a new interview with him where he says the drug period was neccesary for his well being today. I can applaud that and commend him for being so honest, but man, I have those solo records and they are amazing. I would have loved to see where he would be had he been this focused. Just sayin.

I feel like they have lost their hunger. Lost their hunger? That's one way of putting it. Here, allow me to make it perfectly clear: The Red Hot Chili Peppers are now "Adult Contemporary"STING has already welcomed them into the fold.

*that I did not say they "suck". I merely said they're "Adult Contemporary". The killer here is, I like their latest album... *looks down @meself*... Yep: guess I'm all growed up now :-\

I like to call it "Adult Alternative". It's not horrible by any means, believe me anything is better than AFI or Fall Out Boy, but man, they really need to lose the balladry crap. It's frustrating as hell and way too easy. I blame "Under the Bridge" and "Soul to Squeeze"! That isn't the Peppers I grew up on. "Nobody Weird Like Me", come on!!!!! That was the JAM.

"Nobody Weird Like Me" is a personal favorite. My bass player and I have talked about covering it.
Skvor, do you like the funkier songs on the new album at least? There's certainly no shortage of them.

Yeah, I do but I still don't think it's quite the funk of their early days. I think they still have it in them, they've just been playing it a bit safe here lately.

I don't see it as a case of "playing it safe." They're not required to relive their earlier funk sound. They've grown up, their tastes have changed and so has music in general. I like that what they resemble now is more like The Beach Boys. They haven't reached that level of greatness, mind you, but they get close. I've enjoyed the hell out of Stadium Arcadium since I bought it on its release date. The only song I do skip is "Animal Bar". Otherwise I've found it to be a gift that keeps on giving.

"Animal Bar" is one of my 3 or 4 favorites from the album.

"Animal Bar" to me is probably the best song on that whole album.
