Dolly, You haven't gotten Preservation Act 1 yet have you? I listened to that this past weekend, and boy oh boy is it good. Maybe is was the great green substance skewing my judgment, I don't know, but I was really digging it. If you can find a download of a song called "Daylight" check it out. I think it may just be one of the best 70's songs the Kinks made. It's also a pretty reflective album...being released in '73, and Ray is asking "what has happened to all the angry young men" -- it's pretty cool. Sure it's a bit campy - it's a rock opera after all - but it's well worth the listen, and it just may be the Kinks most overlooked album. I haven't got either of the Preservation albums, Paul. Will see if I can download a copy of that song tomorrow night when I'll finally have a moment away from the planning, planning, marking, planning.... It's tough going back to work when you've been off sick.

Just ordered two tix for Ray's Warwick Arts Centre gig in May. It's in my home town, and is a great little venue (saw Richard Thompson there).
I'm so excited!

This thread is not going to die before it's 100 page birthday. I don't care how dead this place is.

Threads have birthdays? Or maybe it's like TV programs needing to have so many episodes before they can be sold successfully into syndication?
I think right now my two favorite Kinks tunes are Dead End Street and Well Respected Man.

This thread is not going to die before it's 100 page birthday. I don't care how dead this place is. As long as you, Ken, and myself stick around, this thread will always be active Now, if Bow, and Phil (I know you're lurking ) would just post here too. You know, I typically like to read Mary's post too....she's quite knowledgeable about music (among other things), too bad she doesn't know the Kinks too well...seems like they'd be right up her alley. From the bands I've read that she likes, seems to me many of them were influenced by the Kinks. Hopefully more will post here, we discuss a few other things besides the Kinks - I'm talking to you Thorns, Fuzz, Ryo, Rocky, Layla, and everyone else. Anyway don't worry Dolly, we'll make it to 100, and well beyond.

Ken, those are two mighty fine songs there. When I made those mixes for you, I now realize I mixed them in 128bit...mistake! They already aren't the best produced recordings out there, I should have done 196bit. Oh well. Anyway, have you listened to "Mr. Churchill Says" on the Arthur album lately? IMO, that's the Kinks best song. It takes about a minute and a half to kick in, but once it does, WOW! Other bands of that day simply weren't doing stuff like that. Notice the odd scale used in Dave's solo as well, it's kinda Mediterranean sounding.

Hey Paul,
How's things - I'm on Easter hols now - huzzah!
You're right - this thread can never die! Even if Castaways sinks like an old abandoned fishing vessel in the middle of the dank North Sea, Ray Davies will float on!
Oh yes.

Y'know I'm sure I remember Mary mentioning The Kinks as one of her likes way back some time....
Listened to Arthur the other week. I still get amazed at how fresh it sounds when I haven't heard it for a while - even if it's not as digitally shiny as some of the old remastered 60s/70s material out there.
Current favourite - Mr Churchil says
I think it's because I've been having to revisit a bit of the old European history in relation to EU Treaty of Rome n all the rest of it. Yes, the EEC/EU turned 50 this week. Here's to ever closer union (pffft)

Hey Dolly, What's happening? How long do you have off for Easter? How's school going? Still liking economics? I'm still plowing through all of the Muse cds you sent. So far my favorite is Symmetry of Origin. I can kinda see all the Radiohead comparisons though....well especially on that particular album. When his voice gets high pitched, it's very Thom Yorke sounding. It's good though, I don't think it's a total rip-off or shitty spawn thing like Creed is to Pearl Jam though. Haven't listened to the newest one yet...gonna get around to that this weekend. Y'know, I'm amazed every single time I listen to 'Arthur'. I seriously think it's my all time favorite rock album. The lyrics are SO relevant in regards to today's times. That's awesome you're digging "Mr. Churchill Says" - that's my favorite Kinks song. It's so fucking rocking! The Kinks just really had a unique thing going for them, and that song really highlights how the Kinks are simply one of the best. Dave's solo is fucking cool too, I love that Mediterranean, possibly Greek, sounding scale he uses. There are so many influential parts to that song, and the album in general. It truly amazes me how little most folks know about the Kinks. I was one of them like two years ago, thankfully I saw the light. For my current job, I had to provide a writing sample...of course I didn't have one as I graduated college a while ago, and I've never needed one for any other job. Anywho, I had to come up w/ something so I wrote why I think the Kinks were an influential and visionary band. The bosses loved it and hired me. So, you could say I owe part of my current employment to them

Hey - that's cool that the Kinks got you your job! It's official - you are a Kin-obsessive!
To be honest I think Arthur probably is the better album over my traditional favourite VGPS, but I'll always have a soft spot for it. Also really enjoying Animal Farm lately when I've never been over-fussed with it. It seems to have worked its way into my consciouness of late along with Mr Churchill Says - not sure why.
Pretty sure Mick Avory listed animal Farm as one of his favourite Kinks songs ever, actually

NP: Muse - Black Holes and Revelations - Starlight (one of my favourite Muse songs)
I have 2 weeks off for Easter - should be going to France if JLLM gets over his tonsillitis in time (Tuesday!). School's ok thanks - Economics is tough when you've had v. little formal training in it, and a loooong time ago - but I'm getting there. One of my classes is full of arrogant boys though, and they're always trying to give me a hard time. My others are lovely though and more than make up for this.
It truly amazes me how little most folks know about the Kinks. I was one of them like two years ago, thankfully I saw the light.
Haha - substitute Kinks for Jesus and you sound like a whacko Born Again Christian.
I think you might like the last Muse - it's quite rocking in places. And everyone loves the end track - Knights of Cydonia. One of the best closers of an album ever I reckon.

Really pissed off with myself in that regard as a copy was for sale in HMV but I didn't buy. and now it's gone. They've got 'Percy' - but I'm holding off on that one...

I think my favorite from VGPS is 'Village Green', but 'Picture Book' is insanely good too, maybe the most perfect pop rock song ever recorded.

'Percy' is okay, but nothing too special. It's one of those that only completest should get. Although, there's a song called "Dreams" on it that is really, really good. The lyrics remind me of me a lot. "When I look so far away Please don't wake me from my dreams I'm just wondering who I could be If I lived inside my dreams I could be a king or a football star Drive around in a big sports car An astronaut or a millionaire I could do anything or go anywhere Dream I'm far away Dream I'm far away Racing driver or a great politician A man of power or a man of religion I could be almost anything If I could live inside my dreams Dream I'm far away Dream I'm far away Please don't wake me from my dreams Please don't wake me from my dreams Please don't wake me from my dreams When I look so far away Please don't wake me from my daze I'm just wondering who I could be If I lived inside my dreams"
