Mott the Hoople were actually expatriot Yanks, weren't they? Ian Hunter is from Cleveland, as I recall. But they scored their biggest hit with Bowie's All the Young Dudes, and were very much part of the UK glam scene, much of which never really translated to the States.
I think James were more succesfull in the US than Pulp were, but that may just have been where I was at when Laid came out. I dunno, I think that they both probably should've been on this poll.
But the Jam remain the best UK artist that never made it in the US ... esp. when you consider that Weller has now had a nearly thirty year career on the UK charts, and has one minor US hit (My Ever Changing Moods, by the friggin' Style Council of all things!) to show for it. He should be in the (US based) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but instead he's "Paul who?" here in the Colonies.

It's funny that most of these bands actually did "make it" to some extent in Canada. There's always seemed to be a better market for the UK sound in Canada than the US. Still holds true to some degree. Never been able to figure out exactly why. It's because you hoser's are still part of the bloody Commonwealth! Or something like that ...

Gotta throw my vote to The Jam here. To me, they've always been THE textbook case for a Brit band that shoulda, but didn't.

And why on earth didn't Madness get a string of US hits? We went out and bought Hall & Oates over here. Well, a little bit, anyway. Why didn't Madness have a bunch of US hits? I dunno ... Our House was a pretty good sized hit, and It Must Be Love got some notice, but that's where it stopped. Keep Moving was an excellent record, but nobody buy me and my roommate bought it here in the States. And after that, well, they were done. I could've seen either Stone Roses or Pulp for this as well, but the former always had a pretty good sized US cult following, and the latter, well, I just think the Jam were better, bigger, and more influential. See, Our House and It Must Be Love were their most anodyne, crappy singles. "One Step Beyond", "Baggy Trousers", "Embarrassment", "Night Boat To Cairo", "The Prince", "House of Fun"... the list goes on, but no record collection should be missing that stuff. It's not a proper collection without some light ska Two Tone stuff that isn't just the Specials.

It's not a proper collection without some light ska Two Tone stuff that isn't just the Specials. We didn't get the early Madness albums here in the Colonies as proper releases. Instead, we got the majority of The Rise and Fall coupled with some earlier singles as Madness, which was released late in '82 or early in '83. Here's the track listing: Our House Tomorrow's (Just Another Day) It Must Be Love Primrose Hill Shut Up House Of Fun Night Boat To Cairo Rise And Fall Blue Skinned Beast Cardiac Arrest Grey Day Madness (Is All In The Mind) This is still the album that any Yank is most likely to own from Madness. Ska revivalism never really caught on in the US until No Doubt and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones etc. had some success with it in the nineties.

Hosers. Fuck I haven't heard that in years. Nice one No problem. Now take off, eh! I love Canadians ... you guys are like us Yanks, only w/o all the ego and "we're God's gift the planet" mentality. If it weren't so friggin' cold up there, I'd be tempted to emigrate ... or at least live closer to the border. As it is ... I like not owning a snow shovel. ;D

that little flash icon or whatever it is, explains totally why Pulp hasn't made it in the US.

That flash clip explains precisely why Jarvis Cocker is God.

It was also enough to take me off the fence with Pulp and Suede.
Pulp it is.

Dunno why I put Stereophonics on here, I'm guess because of the 00s thread up recently. Unlike everyone else on the list (other than Williams, which was a joke), I think they're one of those bands who didn't deserve to get big anywhere but did anyway. Add Travis to that, and even The Libertines, who possibly should have been bigger in the States but hardly deserve what they have overseas.
So anyway, should have stuck in Billy Bragg over Stereophonics for sure. Supergrass is another that got mentioned on the thread I stole this from.
And speaking of that thread- from the Brits over there at least- it blows my mind how effectively the British media was at convincing their public that Oasis was anything short of massive in the U.S. No, they weren't as big as the Beatles or even Pearl Jam, but they were certainly bigger than, say, Alice In Chains at their peak. Definitely Maybe went something like six times platinum in the US. Ridiculous quotes such as "[NME hype band] is trying to succeed in the US where Oasis failed" is just straight bullshit.
BTW, that's a cool Pulp graphic, and achn is quite right.

Thought Pulp may take a lead here, but I was expecting the Stone Roses to pull it off over the Jam...maybe not.

That flash clip explains precisely why Jarvis Cocker is God. Yes. Pulp wins this one for me hands down. It's not even close. And Jarvis Cocker has a solo album coming out soon that I can't wait to hear. It better not suck.

There's no way it can suck. He's God.
