That is a great list. I would take "Wonderwall" for Oasis as well. Plus they should only get one song on the list. So maybe we can substitute "Live Forever" with "Wonderwall", remove "Don't Look Back In Anger" and add Suede's "The Wild Ones" (although I'm agreeable to an alternate here).
Personally I would go with "Pictures Of You" for The Cure, but I can understand why In Between Days" is on the list.

"In Between Days" and "Pictures of You" are both great, but I'd take "Just Like Heaven." In the land of perfect pop songs, "Just Like Heaven" is held up and worshipped as the definitive icon of the form.

"Just Like Heaven" is perfect as well. No question.

Ken, I don't if I have ever noticed this, but are you a basher of The Smiths? Just curious and not as a huge Smiths fan either. I just think that if you hate them, that that is very interesting.
Alright, my list would be a little different that Jesus':
1. Suedehead-Morrissey 2. I Wanna Be Adored-The Stone Roses 3. Only Shallow-My Bloody Valentine 4. Karma Police_Radiohead 5. Live Forever-Oasis 6. Common People-Pulp 7. Insatiable One-Suede 8. Take Me Out-Franz Ferdinand 9. Just Like Heaven-The Cure 10. Regret-New Order

How are The Jam beating Pulp and Stone Roses, or even Suede for that matter? Wtf?
I've been so busy splitting hairs around the best songs that I neglected to notice how many people had voted incorrectly. If you like we can start this thread again so people can make corrections to their votes. It's easy enough to hit the wrong button. No harm done.

Because while I respect Paul Weller, I still think he's an overrated wanker and I just can't really get into the Jam or Style Council for that matter. I just haven't been able to do it.

Skvor -- The Smiths were, are, and probably always shall be my biggest "critical blind spot." I cannot listen to a complete Smiths song without running to the loo to wretch. On paper, they sound like a band I should love, and I agree that Johnny Marr is one of the great rock guitarists, but Morrissey ... oh god how I loathe Morrissey. I can't stand the way he sings, the words he writes, the melodies that spill out of his mouth, the fey way he performs ... I just cannot stand Morrissey. At all. OK, one exception. "Everyday is Like Sunday" is pretty cool, but that's a solo Moz number, so it keeps my Smiths aversion intact. A few years ago, I d/l'd a bunch of Smiths songs, thinking I'd just work them slowly into my playlists alongside Blur, Oasis, Housemartins, etc. ... and instead every time one of 'em came on I'd wind up hitting "NEXT" within 30 seconds of Moz opening his mouth. So I guess if there were ever a Smiths dub album, I'd be cool with that. But as it is, I'd rather listen to Rush than the Smiths. And choosing between the Smiths, Led Zep, and the goddamn Doors is like choosing which level of Dante's inferno I'd wanna spend an hour or two in. They are all better than the satan-spawn himself, Billy Joel, however.

I just haven't been able to do it. yeah, but you voted for Robbie Williams, so while you voted incorrectly as well, I wouldn't go so far as to call it an incorrect vote so much as an amusing vote. It's like voting for Elton John, without the gayness (presumably), but with more tatoos, pot bellies, and bowl cuts. The votes for the Jam aren't amusing. They're just incorrectly entered. Clearly.

Voted incorrectly? Arrogant ponce you are! Some people's overrated personalities appeal to me more than others!

I love Rush more than the average next guy, but christ. For my money The Smiths were perfect in every way. I think I need a new lawyer.

I don't know if you've got any room to complain, Skvor. After all, in addition to voting for Robbie Williams, you have a known Britney Spears fascination. The Jam are winning this poll because (1) they really are the best UK artist that never made in the US, and (2) the posters here have exquisite taste. Also, (3) the fact that I'm bribing everyone who votes for the Jam with gifts from our treasury here at Castaways might have something to do with it.

Ken, I had no idea that you felt that way. I love The Smiths, but I can see what you are saying. I also really like Morrissey's voice so it's okay with me. However clever I thought his lyrics were in the Smiths, solo they can be a bit dauntingly amateurish to a certain degree. Sometimes I would love nothing more than for someone else who doesn't have such a pinache for the over dramatic wrote the lyrics for him. Still, it wouldn't be Morrissey if that were the case and I can say without a doubt he's one of the few artists that every time a record is released, I will go and buy it. Even total crap like "Southpaw Grammar" and wonder why I didn't just get the limited edition Swervedriver vinyl instead.

For some reason, whenever Moz opens his mouth, I just want to hit him upside his head with a 2X4. That'd make their songs a hell of a lot more interesting, if you ask me.

I know Riley, I know. It's all good.
Like I said, Respect Weller, just The Jam is one of those that eludes me. I'd rather listen to the Yardbirds or The Who or the Dave Clark Five to tell you the truth. They just don't do it for me.
I will not be held accountable for having a serious thing for small girls from Louisiana, who also were former mousecateers, who also prefer to have babies with dumb white dudes, poses nude while pregnant, and makes one of the best singles "Toxic" of this decade. Nope, it is not a reflection on me as a human being or my music taste.
