as for the other groups, Different Class by Pulp is absolutely perfect...every song a gem...hardcore and I love life are a little more difficult to get into, but they're still damn good......I did rather like Suede also......but Buzzcocks are more my generation, and they could write a perfect pop-punk song.......I've said this before, but I can see why the founding member (Howard Devoto) went after the first LP, since Magazine is very very different than the Buzzcocks..I don't think Magazine ever made much of a dent in the US except for 'about the weather' on their final LP.........

I know, I love Magazine and think it is shamefull that those guys are not much more recognized. They were a great great band with some good albums.

It needs to be said here that while Different Class is aces, Pulp's best album is actually This is Hardcore.

I would suggest though, even as their biggest and most played single, "Common People" is still Pulp's best song, and quite possibly one of the top 5 greatest pop songs ever recorded.

Yeah, I can easily get behind that. "Help the Aged" is exquisite, too, and I love it every bit as much. Not at first gloss a song that has single written all over it the way "Common People" does, but killer arrangement, GREAT chorus and spot on performance from Jarvis.

I really liked "A Little Soul" off of This Is Hardcore. I didn't think that Jarvis Cocker had those kind of lyrics in him.

Nothing by Pulp tops "Common People". Not even "Disco 2000". It was the crowning moment of their most glorious summer.
I agree with Riley that post-Butler Suede were pretty weak. But I don't think even their excellent self-titled or Dogmanstar are on the same planet as Different Class, This is Hardcore, Stone Roses, etc...
The Jam were more of a singles band, really.

You're getting carried away, aren't you? It's not even in the best 5 British pop songs ever recorded. Not even in the top 5 of the 80s & 90's, in fact. Live Forever - Oasis Street Spirit - Radiohead Bittersweet Symphony - Verve Girls and Boys - Blur I Wanna Be Adored - Stone Roses There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths Plug In Baby - Muse Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division Inbetween Days - The Cure Temptation - New Order Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis Actually, "Common People" is every bit as good (if not better) than all of these, just about. But I just wanted to list some good British pop singles.

I'd take "Temptation" over any of them, though it's probably my favorite song of ever. Also, I'd take "Wonderwall" over anything else in the Oasis catalog, though that's just me.
Nice list though.

Great list there, Jesus. The only ones I can't get behind are (predictably) that damn Smiths song, and "Bittersweet Symphony" ... where for some reason that damn string figure just bugs me, and it always reminds me of a Nike commercial or something.
I really should give the Verve a fairer shake now ...
Love both those Oasis tracks, BTW. "Don't Look Back in Anger" ... that right there justifies all the wonderful things that Noel thinks about himself. Every bit as good as anything from the golden age of British rock, and better than most. Couldn't be any better if it had Lennon/McCartney listed as the writers.

As great as Wonderwall is, Don't Look Back in Anger is better. It's better written, constructed, performed, and sung. Absolutely perfect. IMHO of course.
