Well, my computer got a huge memory upgrade, and it's a bit of a fortress against viruses and adware these days. So I'm debating stealing music again, but after the way Kazaa screwed with my computer last time, I don't know if I want to jump in. Yeah, I know I said my computer was pretty powerful on the defense these days, but I'm still paranoid.
So which program should I use to steal? And is it worth it these days? My last stint on Kazaa, I managed to get a lot of more well-known stuff, but it was impossible to find anything even remotely obscure.
So, uh...any of you guys still download music?

My wife used to have limewire when we first met, and she loved it. Her computer was this creepy mix of cheesy 80s pop hits, The Misfits, Bikini Kill, and Social D bootlegs.
I could never find much I liked on it back in the day, but that was a couple years ago. Hmmm...

Soulseek is the easiest alternative. Of course, luke, if you're familiar with bittorrent or IRC, you can find anything...

Soulseek is the way to go. Get in now before it dies out, because I think it's already jumped the shark.

how on earth has slsk jumped the shark?
Oink and indie torrents have a lot of decent stuff, but you need an invite to use them.

Speaking of stealing though not quite the way this thread intends..............
Axl Rose under fire from band members
LOS ANGELES -- Two former members of the rock band Guns N' Roses have sued front man Axl Rose for allegedly naming himself sole administrator of the group's copyrights.
The suit was filed Aug. 17 in federal court by Slash and Duff, otherwise known as Saul Hudson and Michael McKagan.
It accuses Rose of profiting from their revenue shares to the tune of about $500,000 US a year.
The suit claims Rose directed the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers to send all publishing royalties to his publishing company, bypassing the band's other partners.
Rose's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, said the singer had asked to receive only his portion of royalties, and that the overpayment was due to a clerical error by the society.
He said Rose had returned the extra funds to the organization.

Saw that one on MSN. He's such a dick. But I hate when they tell us rock stars' real names...
Yeah, soulseek is wanting me to pay, like, fifteen bucks or something. Is it worth it?
IRC seems like it'd take awhile to get into to the point where I'm just downloading songs all over the place. I'm reading up on bittorrent right now, though...I'm gonna download some songs today, goddamnit.

Think I'm going to keep doing my bittorrent homework, figure the ropes out. I always choose open source over anything else, so it seems like the best idea. In the meantime, though, I'll probably download limewire, too...

It seems odd that they would give the real names of Slash and Duff but not Axl...
Bittorrent's really cool, I've been d/ling comics books on bittorrents for about a year and half now...some TV shows too. I've never d/led any music until last night though...

Hey, what happened to the bug?
I haven't downloaded anything since Kazaa either. I never jumped on the scene like I should have - I was on dialup then. I only ripped a select few items.

you're probably going to the wrong slsk site luke. There's a bunch of fake ones that try to get you to buy it, when it's really free. the real website is www.slsknet.org/version 157 has better search results, but 156 has more people so you're more likely to find something. The best way to go about finding stuff is to join a few rooms and build up a big buddy list so it's easier to find albums.

It's jumped the shark because of the fake file floods (which seem to have been fixed), poor search results and general instability. It's also a matter of time before the RIAA gets its mitts on it. The days of being under the radar are fading fast.
I sure as hell hope it does die though...
As for paying for slsk, you should pay for privs. I do it and without it I might not even bother half the time.

Downloaded Limewire, still looking into all other options. The RIAA will have most of these major sites shut down within a couple years, but the law will never catch up with open source technology.
