It's not a great album by any means, but I have to say that some of the songwriting on the new one isn't bad. I went and listened to the whole thing on the MTV first look site and while I think that Brandon Flowers is a pompous asshole, he is pretty capable with writing some decent songs. I know he claims the whole "Bruce Springsteen" thing, but it still sounds like U2 with a decent singer.
Yep, I said it: Mr. Flowers runs vocal circles around that Robin Williams-looking hack Bono.

Looking forward to: This fascinating, unsettling and unique project comes down to one simple idea : a collection of songs based on the ten Biblical plagues that take place in the book of Exodus.
A simple idea, but a complicated story - these songs were originally commissioned by a Briitish arts organisation called Artangel to form part of a large-scale public art event. The Margate Exodus takes place in September 2006; it transforms a dilapidated seaside town on the North Kent Coast into the setting for a vibrant modern recreation of the Israelites' flight from Egypt. During the event, the 10 "Plague Songs" will be performed by local singers and musicians; together, the festivities will form part of a feature film which is to be broadcast and screened in 2007.
The 4AD release gathers together the 10 original recordings, presented in Biblical plague order. It moves from the scattershot, street-level drama of Klashnekoff's "Blood" through to the tender lament for a real-life "Death Of The Firstborn" written by Rufus Wainwright. On the way, there's the sublime hover of Brian Eno & Robert Wyatt's "Flies", the cracked, surreal sparseness of The Tiger Lillies "Hailstones", and Laurie Anderson's grave, shadowy meditation on the Death Of Livestock. Imogen Heap's "Glittering Clouds" is a soaring pop song driven along by locust samples, while Scott Walker's "Darkness" (what else ?) is simply astonishing - a driven and almost completely a capella call-and-response which will raise the hairs on the back of your neck.
All ten tracks are exclusive to this release; and despite their various soundworlds and approaches they form a surprisingly coherent and convincing whole.
Tracklisting :
1. "Blood" - Klashnekoff (The Plague Of Blood)
2. "Relate the Tale" - King Creosote (The Plague Of Frogs)
3. "The Meaning of Lice" - Stephin Merritt (The Plague Of Lice)
4. "Flies" - Brian Eno & Robert Wyatt (The Plague Of Flies)
5. "The Fifth Plague" - Laurie Anderson (The Death Of Livestock)
6. "Boils" - Cody ChesnuTT (The Plague Of Boils)
7. "Hailstones" - The Tiger Lillies (The Plague Of Hail)
8. "Glittering Cloud" - Imogen Heap (The Plague Of Locusts)
9. "Darkness" - Scott Walker (The Plague Of Darkness)
10. "Katonah" - Rufus Wainwright (The Death Of The Firstborn

Here are today's 10 modern Plagues ...
(1) acid rain (2) depletion of the ozone layer (3) destruction of tropical rain forests (4) global warming (5) soil erosion and depletion (6) loss of biodiversity (7) water pollution (8) air pollution (9) an increase of severity of storms and floods (10) increased use of pesticides, chemical fertilizer, and other toxic chemicals.
The Egyptians were subjected to one plague at a time, while the modern plagues are threatening everyone of us simultaneously.
Instead of an ancient Pharoah's heart being hardened, our hearts today have been hardened by the greed, laziness, materialism, and waste that are at the root of current environmental threats.

skvor, I say pick up the new Lemonheads. I like the Lemonheads a lot, so it's a no-brainer for me, but there are some great songs on there.
I like the single "When You Were Young" by the Killers enough, but I've never been terribly crazy about them. A tad overblown. Still, they are catchy enough, and I really, really liked "All These Things That I've Done" off of Hot Fuss.

Rolling Stone (rollingstone.com) has issued the following report:
Holy Eff! GUNS N ROSES’ Chinese Democracy Out November 21st?
"From the annals of We’ll Believe It When We See It: A friend of ours with a retail source has told us that the long awaited Guns N’ Roses album, Chinese Democracy, has gotten a firm release date of November 21st.
Under normal circumstances we’d laugh at such an assertion — after all, this album has reportedly cost more than $13 million and has been “due out” since 1998.
But whenever somebody has actually managed to get Axl to speak in the past few months, he’s said it’s coming out before the end of the year.
Plus, there was that GN'R tour announcement the other day that alluded to a release date some time in the next two months. Dare to dream, folks. Dare to dream."

Well, there you have it. Fuck the Killers.
I like "The Eraser" by Thom Yorke less and less everytime I hear it.

I like "The Eraser" but it really just sounds like Kid A Junior to me with some kid in the corner with an Aphex Twin fixation. I find it pleasant but kind of boring.
Brandon Flowers is perhaps one of the biggest idiots in rock but man the Killers write catchy tunes.

I absolutely loved Hot Fuss (and in a genuine way, not the "well, liking them ain't the hipster thing to do so I only like them sardonically"), but this new Killers album is the shittiest piece of shit I've heard this year. Wretched fuck of an album. Flowers murdered his vocals.
New Lemonheads is pretty top notch, though.
Still waiting for Sloan to come in the mail. Losing patience fast.
Lovely Feathers still make me happier than anyone this year.

Lovely Feathers still make me happier than anyone this year. Yeah, I'm liking that album more every time I listen to it. Nice little album that I might have missed had I not been guest hosting a friend's radio show that day it came into the station - we had no idea what it was but we liked the cover, so decided to play it on the show. They were pretty fun (and really fucking loud) when I saw them this summer too. ~ I need to get that Lemonheads. Maybe today. And haven't listened to that Sloan yet, but husband has listened to it a few times now and seems pretty impressed overall.
