Oh yeah, plus I gotta disagree w/ you about the vocals on Riot Act. I think amazing is a bit strong...to me, Vedder sounds a little bored w/ some of the songs and doesn't let his angry growl out, or his melodic/somber/reflective voice out at all like he does "Life Wasted" or "Off He Goes" I hear ya Paul, although I'd maintain Eddie wasn't "bored" exactly, but rather, intentionally setting the register of his voice -- the tone, if you will -- down lower into a mellower, and more moderate range. It's a far more reflective/introspective album than most of their catalogue, which tends to be deflective/extroverted, which is another way to say "rocking". So yeah, in that sense, I can see how Self-Titled can be reckoned as a "return to form" when you consider the "form" to be flat-out "rocking out", sure. But they have never lost sense of their craftmanship. And RIOT ACT is all about craftmanship, imo.

I gotta disagree on Riot Act -- if it's not a "bad" album, it does an awfully good imitation of one! The whole thing is completely forgettable. In just one track on their latest, Gone, the band completely captured and surpassed the vibe of Riot Act. Of course, I still don't like Ten, either, and I love Binaural, so take my opinion for whatever it's worth!

I have the same issue with Riot Act, there's just very little memorable on it. Nothing sticks with me anyway.

Of course, I still don't like Ten, either, and I love Binaural, so take my opinion for whatever it's worth! I wouldn't say it's a bad album necessarily, but it certainly falls flat in certain areas. For me, it's a slow burn album similar to Binaural. Both albums took an incredibly long time for me to open up to. I'm still not 100% on Riot Act though, and Binaural while good, definitely has some stinkers. Ken, Ded, when's the last time you listened to RA, and in particular "Green Disease" and "1/2 Full"? The latter I used to hate. I even went as far as to call it a poor man's "Red Mosquito". However, upon further review I think it's a pretty cool song. As I mentioned yesterday, the ending jam in awesome, Mr. Cameron really does some neat things on drums, and Mr. McCready wails. The fist half of the song is OK, not great - it actually kinda reminds me of the Black Crowes a lil bit. So anyway, if y'all were to make a list of your top 25 songs or so, or if y'all could have your ideal live set list, what would it be? Or both....I'm just curious to see how different everyone's songs are considering PJ has some 150++ songs to choose from.

Really good songs form Riot Act IMO:
Green Disease 1/2 full Can't Keep Ghost I Am Mine
OK/Pretty Good Songs:
Get Right Save You Help Help Bu$hleaguer All Or None
Songs I don't like too much, but I don't hate:
Arc Thumbing My Way Love Boat Captain Crop Duster You Are
-- So for me, it's not a terrible album, the majority of it is passable, maybe like Ken said though, not very memorable.

I haven't listened to Riot Act since ... the last time you asked me to! It's just a boring record, IMO, and one that I almost never feel the need to toss on.
I'll post my fave PJ tunes later today. Off the top of my head, I can tell you that probably four or five cuts from the self-titled, "Corduroy," "Light Years," "Soon Forget," and "Not For You" are all sure to be on there.

So "Green Disease" does nothing for you? I think that it may quite possibly be a top tier PJ song. But overall, yeah I agree, it's kinda boring. If Avocado would've been a stinker I don't know what I would've done -- I was prepared to crown Wilco the best modern American band, but PJ held on.

Has anyone beside ded and myself heard this yet? IMO, it just may be PJ's best cover...I guess most will think RITFW, or B'oR....those are certainly the ones they cover the most. Fuckin' Up is solid as well, but this, wow, it really surprised me. Ed Ved screams like it was 1993 all over again, and they bust out the synthesizer. A freakin' synth! Didn't think I'd ever hear PJ do that, but it sounds fantastic. As a member of the 10C, I got a copy of that on wax now - side two is U-Jam (PJ w/ Bono and the Edge covering Rockin' in the Free World).

Here's a tentative list for me. I just kinda threw this together but it's close. I may need to revise soon, as I'm sure I've forgotten some stuff. I'm still not sure about my order either...I know "In My Tree" is my #1 - other than that, I'm not sure. I'll list that first, but after is in no real order - just what's off the top of my head.
1. In My Tree State Of Love & Trust I Got Shit Black Red Yellow Animal Last Exit Immortality Who You Are Off He Goes Faithful All Those Yesterday's Insignificance Parting Ways Can't Keep Green Disease Life Wasted Marker In The Sand Present Tense Long Road Sad Not For You Rearviewmirror Hail,Hail Do The Evolution Corduroy

I must say, I finally got around to blasting the selftitled on stereo for the first time ever (I've always been a headphones person, but now I have a roommate who's a fellow early grunge/California punk fanatic), and Marker in the Sand particularly blew me the F away. Found myself suddenly enchanted by the melody...
Great songs off of Riot Act:
All of them.

The only song I really like from Riot Act (sorta) is Ed's solo live versions of Can't Keep. Green Disease 1/2 full Ghost I Am Mine These are ok but there none of them are songs I'd say "Man, I wish they'd play _____" about next time I see them live.

One half is like a ballad and the other half is like kick your face in early AC/DC.

I finally got to LISTEN to the self titled album the other day - damn good stuff! Can't really say anything detailed about it as I've only played it once, but should do some headphones listening soon and will get to know stuff a little better - but yeah overall impressions, GREAT album, big return to form after a patchy Riot Act ( not bad, just patchy in my opinion)
Self titled sounds kinda revitalised though, and its quite FUN sounding too.

Lyrically, it's as Rage as Rage could be... but in terms of the switch-up, I can't think of another band who could pull it off without even trying. Rehearse as anybody might... this thing's just natural. When Vedder's screaming his shredded chords out, I can hear a little Cornell. ... Maybe this is what Audioslave was meant to be?
