and here's my consensus on self - titled.
The greatest album of Pearl Jam's illustrious career thus far.
That is all.

and here's my consensus on self - titled. The greatest album of Pearl Jam's illustrious career thus far. That is all. Most consistent album yes. I still think No Code is PJ at their best. That album came from nowhere, especially after the first three. It was such a departure for them, plus the mood of the album is just brilliant. As much as I LOVE Avocado, I don't know if any of the songs (other than Life Wasted) are as good as the following: Hail,Hail, In MY Tree, Who You Are, Present Tense, Red Mosquito, and Off He Goes. IMO, those songs alone make No Code the best and most heart felt Pearl Jam album.

I have to agree with Thorn somewhat - after a week of listening to self titled, I'm absolutely amazed. Not just impressed - amazed! It seems to gather up all the best elements of PJ's music and wrap it into one fantastic shot of an album - were they hanging on to these songs for a while until they split with Epic?
Seriously, every track is a winner and finds the band at full strength, in a way that hasn't been present on the previous two records - good as they are, they are nowhere as consistent as this.
No Code and Yeild happen to be my two favourite PJ albums, with Vitalogy a close third - but self titled may easily change these rankings in time.

Pearl Jam's self-titled is IMHO the best thing they've ever done. I used to put No Code in that spot, ahead of Vitalogy, but they're also-rans compared to the latest. Not a dud tune here, and the best stuff is probably the best studio work they've ever done. It's a career high in every respect, to my ears.

Vitalogy is still my favorite, but s/t is probably a better album. It's pretty flawless.

Wake the hell up, PJ board... and savor this spicy and delicious Vedder news!
Vedder Goes Solo For 'Into The Wild' Soundtrack July 04, 2007, 12:00 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder is close to finishing a host of new music for the upcoming Sean Penn-directed film "Into the Wild," according to the movie's distributor, Paramount Vantage. An album of his songs is due on a September date to be announced, via J Records. Gustavo Santaolalla and guitarist Kaki King also contributed to the film score, sources say.
Vedder and Penn have been friends for more than a decade; the Pearl Jam frontman previously contributed music to the soundtrack for Penn's 1995 film "Dead Man Walking" and also recorded a cover of the Beatles' "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" for 2001's Penn-starring "I Am Sam."
"Into the Wild," which is based on Jon Krakauer's book of the same name, opens Sept. 21 in U.S. theaters. It stars Emile Hirsch, Vince Vaughn, Catherine Keener and William Hurt. Contrary to Internet reports, Vedder does not appear in the movie.
Meanwhile, Vedder has also contributed two new songs, "No More" and "Long Nights," to the documentary "Body of War." The former track has been performed at a handful of Pearl Jam's recent concerts in Europe.
Finally, Vedder is among the artists, authors and film stars choosing their favorite Sonic Youth songs for the compilation "Hits Are for Squares," which, as previously reported, is due to hit Starbucks locations in early 2008.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I've been wondering if Vedder will ever go solo. I guess this isn't a proper album though, and some of these solo tracks will probably make their way in Pearl Jam rehearsals. I think it's really fucking cool when Vedder does a short (one to two songs) solo set before the opening band at PJ gigs.
I read somewhere where Mike and Matt have been kicking ideas around. Sounds like they may head to the studio this Winter.

Vedder seems to like dipping into other projects, so I wouldn't be suprised if we a solo album some day... he's been involved with all sorts of musical friends, even good ol' Neil Finn on the "Seven worlds Collide" live album, tour and DVD... he did some pretty darn cool stuff with Finn as well - covered some old Split Enz tunes, played some PJ material with Neil, etc... He seems to have incredibly cool taste in music, which always makes me wanna hear what he has to say and do next.
If he released a solo album I'd be one of the first in line to get it, especially after Pearl Jam's self titled album sounded so damn good!

Him and Abruzzee (sp?)
So I saw a few set list from PJ's Euro summer tour...they played two new songs. Maybe they're heading back to the studio soon. I remember reading that during the Avocado sessions, they recorded 25 songs. Seems like another album should be on the horizon, or Lost Dogs V.2

Pearl Jam Brings It All Back Home To Close Lollapalooza
Playing its most watched U.S. show in a decade, Pearl Jam closed the 2007 edition of Lollapalooza on a political note, bringing injured Iraq War soldier Thomas Young on stage to urge the audience to rededicate itself to ending the conflict in the Middle East. The two-hour-plus set concluded with a stage full of friends (including Ben Harper and ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman) and fans flanking Pearl Jam for a ferocious cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."
Pearl Jam, who has largely eschewed festival performances since nine fans were crushed to death during its set at Denmark's Roskilde Festival in 2000, leaned heavily on its time-tested hits, galvanizing the capacity crowd with renditions of "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Better Man" and "Alive." Frontman Eddie Vedder, who grew up in nearby Evanston, made clear the band's appreciation for the occasion, telling the audience, "There's a deep amount of meaning that comes with playing on this stage tonight."
My Morning Jacket teed up the crowd for Pearl Jam's performance by playing most of its set with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. The teenage musicians gave extra sonic girth to tracks like "Gideon," "Dondante," "Just One Thing" and "Wordless Chorus," while the band itself, decked out in tuxedos, excelled on classic rock-inspired cuts like "One Big Holiday," opener "Anytime" and the reggae-tinged "Off the Record." The set closed with a cover of Curtis Mayfield's classic "Move on Up."
Earlier in the day, Vedder joined Kings Of Leon on their closing number, "Slow Night, So Long," singing with frontman Caleb Followill and bashing two tambourines together. The Tennessee group rocked through a set featuring tracks like "Molly's Chambers," "On Call," "The Bucket" and "Razz," more than translating the Southern-soaked rock'n'roll of its three studio albums to a sizable festival crowd.
Other notable performances on the festival's final day were turned in by hometown rapper Lupe Fiasco, who balanced his Grammy-nominated hit "Kick, Push" with two new songs, "Superstardom" and "Paris, Tokyo," which will appear on his next album, "Lupe Fiasco's The Cool," tentatively due Oct. 31. New York-based indie rock act !!! got the crowd moving just before My Morning Jacket's set with funky numbers such as "Must Be the Moon" and "All My Heroes Are Weirdos." Across the field, Iggy Pop invited the audience on stage to sing with him during the band's late afternoon set, causing minor mayhem in the process. Peter Bjorn & John's set was cut short due to sound problems, while the jagged rock of Modest Mouse punctured the humid air on songs such as "Dashboard," flecked by the guitar work of former Smiths axeman Johnny Marr.
Wow! Apparently, Pearl Jam is also pretty good live!

causing minor mayhem
I like minor mayhem, nice. I'd like to go see the Stooges, why not. I don't own a lot of their collection, just the debut, but from what I've heard on Fun House, and Raw Power I dig - I really should buy those albums. Hopefully they'll come to the 9:30 Club.
Oh, and that Pearl Jam band sucks live. I'd know, seen 'em 8 times.
