Tough one this. I'd have to say Tool, but maybe the Pumpkins on Sundays.

I own one Alice in Chains disc, a couple each by Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, most of the Pumpkins’ catalogue and all of Nirvana’s, aside from Bleach. I never got into Pearl Jam and don’t listen to any of the others very much any more either, but if I was to pop one in tomorrow, odds are it would be something by SP, so I voted for them on that basis. Honestly though, in terms of 90s American bands, I was always much more in Grant Lee Buffalo / Low / American Music Club territory.

pearl jam. 7 great albums, a bunch of neat live albums, and acoustically, they're beautiful. highlight songs include "i am mine", "off he goes", "garden", "light years", and a billion others.

Consider this another vote cast for Smashing Pumpkins. My order of preference among the those bands goes something like:
1. Smashing Pumpkins 2. Nirvana 3. Nine Inch Nails 4. Pearl Jam 5. Alice In Chains/Soundgarden (tie - I could care less about either bands)
I haven't heard a single note from Tool.

You thinking of doing a 90s British band poll too, JLLM? Although I get the feeling that Radiohead would take that one easily...

Not a HUGE fan of any of the candidates, but my vote went for The Pumpkins.

I really wanted to say Tool. All the bands are different. I like them all. Tool is on a totally different level. Pearl Jam is kicking more ass than ever today, especially live they're a godamn monster. But I have to give it up for a band that tragically and sadly enough never made it out of the 90s. No, it's not Nirvana (though sad as well). Im talking about the allmighty Alice In Fucking Chains. They were the most diverse. They wrote the most gutwrenching, painfully evil, but yet beautifully hopeful music I've ever heard. They wrote some of the most honest, revealing lyrics you will ever hear, and sang them with not one, but two great singers that amazingly complimented each other as well as stood on their own. I don't think we'll ever hear a combination as good as Staley/Cantrell again. I relate to their music on so many different levels. I can be in a big depression and throw on the mellow Jar Of Flies, and as painful as they sound on some of the songs, such as Nutshell, or Don't Follow, it's so touching, so real, it somehow makes me feel better. Then I'll hop in the car, throw on some early We Die Young, or Social Parasite, and rock out with my friends on the way to the bar. Sometimes during the fall I really like to listen to songs like Got Me Wrong, and just smoke a fat doobie and watch the leaves fall and enjoy the moment. They're there through the good times and the bad, and all the talentless trends. Often imitated, but never duplicated, AIC is truly the mightiest 90s band.

Yeah, AIC were great in every sense of the word. I heard a Velvet Revolver song just the other week that sounded just like 'em, or maybe I imagined that...
All of these bands were extremely good (although Nirvana were overrated imho, and NIN can get a bit annoying for reasons I can't quite specify). All exported successfully to the UK too, which is why these are the bands I chose for the poll, although including TOOL was maybe a bit of a mistake on reflection, since they're not so much a "90's band" as the others.

Hey Tool came out in 92. And I was there. From the first EP. True, but inbetween sips of coke, I have to tell you I think they're selling out, laying down and sucking up to the man.

It's almost to the point where TOOL and Nickelback are the same band, but one of their singers doesn't resemble a Wizard Of Oz characater. Other than that...

If the Pumpkins get more votes than TOOL I'm leaving the boards forever.
... as he watches the Pumpkins total climb exponentially after playing his hand too quickly...
