The companion piece for the Side One/Track One discussion: what are the greatest album closers of all time?
The same simple rules apply: no compilitions, no live albums unless they consist of entirely unreleased material, etc. I'm thinking primarily in the rock context, but feel free to go as far afield as you care to.
So post your top 25 picks, and feel free to comment on the other lists. Tentative deadline will be NEXT Friday, which is (I believe) Feb. 23, 2007.
Have at it!

Okay, first question: How do we deal with hidden tracks? Example: is the album closer of record on the Blanche album "Someday" or "Runnin' With the Devil"?

Hidden tracks don't count...imo...

...I guess it could though, of course my mind goes straight to Springsteen- Meeting Across The River is like part of Jungleland in my head, it should be anyway...
What about say The Abby Road medley? Is that sperate tracks or a single closer? (don't worry about Her Majesty for a moment...)

I'd say you can either list both tracks ("Someday/Running With the Devil") or you can just list the "hidden" cut if it's well known and more than just a snippet ("Train in Vain").
If it clocks in at thirty seconds or less (i.e. "Her Majesty" isn't really the closer for Abbey Road, except as a tag on to "The End" (arguably, that's even misleading and it should be "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End/Her Majesty"), um where was I? oh yeah) then it should be appended to the previous song (as I did with the Beatles Abbey Road example above). (Did I set a parenthetical record in this paragraph yet? There's more parenthetical here than not).

Ha! I started typing my last post in response to Rocky's question, got tied up on the phone, and wound up answering DED's without even being aware of it!

I've always thought of "Someday" as really being the album closer. And usually think of the last "official" track as the closer, just because often times there's a big gap before those hidden tracks and they aren't really a part of the album if you know what I mean. This may need to be more heavily debated. I think I'm with DED.

I think when then hidden track is fifteen or twenty minutes after the last listed track it's clearly not meant to be part of the "album" but if there's an unlisted track immediately after the last listed track then it probably is. Though again I think even if multiple tracks are listed you could use them as long they make up the closer as a whole....though you couldn't list the last four tracks just because you really like all four tracks...

When the songs run together seemlessly (like the Abbey Road medley), I think it's fair to list all of them. But when it's (for example) three songs that just fit together beautifully (the closing trio for Ziggy Stardust springs immediately to mind -- "Ziggy Stardust," "Suffragette City," and "Rock and Roll Suicide") you can't list all three. Therefore, you can properly vote for "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End" but if you wanna vote for something from Ziggy Stardust, the only thing you can pick is "Rock and Roll Suicide."
As for those ones where there's a big-ass break within the track and then a totally unrelated song comes on ... well, I think that's an individual call. Does Lyle Lovett's Road to Ensenada end with "Christmas" or with "The Girl in the Corner" -- that's your decision, I think. I try to be a lumper not a splitter when it comes to figuring these things up, and so it's likely that if we've got two votes for Abbey Road (for example), it won't really matter which songs are listed there, it'll go in the "Abbey Road" column.
Does that make sense?
