Actually, Ken, as a self-contained piece, I think there's more of an internal logic to the "Accidents Will Happen" through to "Two Little Hitlers" version (or given that's it was a product of the 33 1/3 world, "Goon Squad" through TLH). But I know what you mean. We had the same version as you and you get used to what you had. Yeah, I can see what Elvis was thinking, but for me "What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding" is just an essential part of the record. It's the cathartic cry at the end of the whole mess. You've got all these disasters documented throughout the rest of the record, and then at the end you've got Elvis wailing over that pounding riff: "every time I feel like this inside there's one thing I wanna know -- just what's so funny about peace love and understanding?" After forty minutes of "emotional fascism," he's still the guy saying "WTF happened to All You Need is Love?" Similarly, "Night Rally" is a great closing piece for This Year's Model, but "Radio Radio" makes it into a cathartic boogie at the end of the record instead of this insular repetitive groove. Either way is great, but I'm so used to the catharsis of "Radio Radio" (and prefer to find some reason to believe after looking around at the mess we've made of the world).

Thanx thorny. Say, did you ever listen to the CDs? I dig the Hank III you recorded for me.

Melaun -- did you see my earlier post about some of your picks not being album closers? You might want to edit or repost your selections to reflect that.

Goddam, I've got almost 60 candidates on my "short list" right now, and I haven't even finished sifting through my collection! This is in-freaking-possible.
BTW, R.E.M. has got to be the all-time champ of this category (with the Who right there). I think I've got the closers from Reckoning, Fables, Lifes Rich Pageant, Green, Out of Time ("Me in Honey" is one of my fave R.E.M. songs), Automatic, Hi-Fi, and Up ("Falls to Climb" -- gorgeous!). If Reveal had cut out one track sooner ("I'll Take the Rain" vs. "Beach Ball") it would've been there too. And the Who ... "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Who Are You," "Love Reign O'er Me" ... damn!

Another bump -- and a reminder that this list will close not this Friday but NEXT Friday, March 2, also at 6:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Unless I change my mind.

I made a quick list on the back of this 'ere envelope, then read those already posted, and I realise I've not exactly been original. Never mind. I've plagiarised Mary before now, so it's nothing new.
This is harder than track 1 isn't it? Nearly every great album kicks off with a bang, but many of them end with some gentle little come-down afterthought.
