Kind of wish I'd included The Cure's "Pornography" in that list - didn't think the song was quite up to the rest of the album until I watched the Trilogy DVD and reappraised it. Maybe Idlewild's "Remote Part/Scottish Friction" too.

Hey, considering me and Sigman are on opposite sides of the great musical divide, I can't believe I scored most closely with his list - five of Rocky's picks made my top 14, and several of his 'bubbling under' were also in my list. I think Nostradamus actually presaged this event in his entry: "March 14th and there will be a coincidence in the utterings of the great ones in the west such that, though the Yankee bastard still won't admit Wilco are shit and White Stripes are play-by-numbers blues, still there would much suprise be. Fuck this though, I'm off for a quick hand shandy."
I only had three picks the same as Mary. Nostradamus was probably silent on this point.

But you get triple points for Some Kind of Stranger cause you are the only dude around here (presuming ueb's continued absence - and she's not a dude, for that matter) who would proudly put that overly theatrical pretentious shite on your list. Thank you for backing me up on that, sir. Cheers, M

cause you are the only dude around here ... who would proudly put that overly theatrical pretentious shite on your list. It makes sense. If I've been called one thing in life more than anything else, it's 'overly theatrical pretentious shite'. Maybe that's why the song strikes a chord.

Maybe that's why the song strikes a chord. you have no idea how many people i have introduced to that song.... .and every single one of them has forced me to turn it off about halfway through!! there is a 74% chance that my ex broke up with me because i forced him to endure the entire thing. by the end of the song he formally withdrew every single compliment he had ever given me on account of my musical taste. but fuck it. i still love that song. we pretentious shites have to stick together, ya know.

..........and lest we forget The End--the Doors I like the Doors, but I've never been a huge fan of the End. Although, I do like the ending of it -- they kinda freak out, and I dig that sort of thing. The best Doors album closer, IMO is either 'The Soft Parade', or 'Riders On the Storm'. Still have never quite understood the sheer hatred for them...I mean they're not THAT bad. How could one not like the riff to "Peace Frog"?

I think the hatred is more about the Cult of Morrison than it is the music. They were a decent band that was occassionally awful and occassionally really good, who often gets lumped in with the all time greats, and that can get annoying. Probably not really deserving of quite the level of backlash they've gotten, but I think that's mostly what it's about.

^^^ Huh, that's interesting...that helps explain it, thanks. I always thought Morrison was kinda over the top and thought Robby Krieger in particular got overlooked - he's a pretty bad ass guitarist, plus he wrote some of their best known songs like "Light My Fire", "Touch Me", "Love Me Two Times", and "Love Her Madly". I agree that Morrison gets a bit too much credit, but he was, IMO, a pretty revolutionary front man, and hugely influential.
In a matter of three or four years they put out some of the best known songs in classic rock...I think they deserve a lot of the attention they get...but, some of the focus needs to be taken away from Morrison. That cult following of his is kinda annoying. They certainly aren't as good as The Who, Beatles, Hendrix, Kinks, CCR, etc...but I think they're just a hair below the top tier - Like tops of the B-list or something like that.
