Other then unconventional instrumentation, which was used to minimal effect, they were an average rock band with a drunk that wrote really bad poetry singing for them. That being said more then not The Doors were just a really average not terrible band, they occasionally did some neat stuff and even wrote a couple really good songs. They just aren't and never were a great band. They were god awful live too. I'm not saying you shouldn't like them though...

Morrison was definately very influential as a front man, although I think in general I like the people he influenced more than I like him. I do think he was an excellent singer though, although his lyrics were mostly crap. He's a good example of a guy who set the stage for a bunch of people who eclipsed him, IMO.
I think I would like the Doors a lot more than I do if it weren't for the fact that during some very formative years for me musically, Ray Manzarek was on every music TV show, every radio show, just all over the place talking about Jim Morrison. I just got really tired of hearing him talking about the same things over and over again, and exaggerating his own greatness.

I'd like the Doors a lot more if they didn't suck so damn hard.
Rocky's right about Morrison being eclipsed by his imitators, but he's giving Jimbo waaaaaaaaay too much credit as a vocalist. Tom Jones had more soul than the Lizard King, and a better sense of pitch and phrasing, too.
Not only have I had to sit through Manzanarek saying how great the band was, I also had to put up with that damn "He's Hot, He's Sexy, and He's Dead" cover of Rolling Stone, too. Fucking cult of Morrison. I hate the Doors.
And at least "The End" is laughably bad, "Riders on the Storm" manages to be both preposturously pretentious and sleep inducing all at the same time. And it's one of the most irratating instrumental lines in soft jazz, I mean, rock. Fucking sucks.
I motherfucking hate the motherfucking Doors.

Riders On The Storm is one the hand full of songs I actually like...one of my other favorites is Whiskey Bar but who does a bad version of Whiskey Bar? Nobody.

I should clarify that I meant to say that he had a great voice, not necessarily that he was a great singer. I do think he had a cool tone. Sometimes he used it well, sometimes he didn't.

Michael Hutchence is a perfect example of a much better Jim Morrison than Jim Morrison. "Riders On The Storm" is one of the few Doors songs I like a lot. "The Changeling" also comes to mind. That's about it. Although I'm sure there are a few more. I just can't think of any right now.

I have no digs on Jim Morrison. He was what he was. People love him. He was a prophet or a guru of some kind....Plus alot of women (women I know to this day!) didnt want Morrison to flash his private area to the world--they wanted a private date with it. the other day I wanted to play Soft Parade in the car with the better half present--I asked "what do you think of the doors? Do they suck? Can I play this?" she was offended--as if I dont remember that one of the twenty tapes she had when I met her was Doors Greatest Hits--haha--I played the new Idlewild instead....
Best Doors Songs- "Not To Touch THe Earth" (hearing it in my head now that cheesy guitar part after "Run With Me" pisses me off.....Ive got issues I know)
"Peace Frog" - Ray Mazgeneric should have been kicked out of the damn band with his dumb ass organ following him. I love this song though. I dont think they realized how the reliance on that keyboard would date their material. Great song though. Just personal preference. Thats wrong what I just said about Mr Maz...It just doesnt have ANY BITE at all...Back then it was probably the shit.
LAND HO (in fact all of Morrison Hotel is alright) Morrison Hotel is the only Doors album I can play straight through, just in case anyone was wondering.
"The End" in my opinon is not a great album closer. I dont even want to kill my dad or do nothing with my mom. Its not revolutionary to me. Thats my problem. Anyone here on these boards could come up with something better.

The tag end of Jethro Tull's Minstel In The Gallery after the end of the 30 second "Grace" you hear footsteps, then the failed try at some locked door with the shout of 'I can't get out!' ---- just always stuck me funny.......

Have you heard Duran Duran's cover of the Crystal Ship? It's actually not half bad.

Yeah, check it out if you can find it. It's been years since I've heard it, but I remember being kinda impressed. Man, I need to get some of the re-re-reissue Doors CDs...the ones I have are from the late 80's/early 90's and sound terrible - and no Ken they don't sound bad b/c the music sucks I hate buying albums I already own, but I wouldn't mind getting an updated version of 'Morrison Hotel' - there's some quality rock on that one. 'Strange Days' is pretty cool too.

So uh, do we have a definitive list of like 12 songs or something? Come to think of it, that would be a pretty cool mix CD....nothing but the coolest/best album closers.
What album closer would start the album?
One cool one that hasn't been mentioned here (at least I don't think it's been mentioned) is "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" from Paul's Boutique. I think it would only be proper that it's included on any 'best album closer' list.
Did a google search on Paul's Boutique...came across this site - it's pretty fucking cool...http://paulsboutique.info/
It list all the samples and references made on that album - there's a lot!
